Learn to Be Content

“… we are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not despairing; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying about in the body the dying of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body.  For we who live are constantly being delivered over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh.” – 2 Corinthians 4:8-12

“I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am.  I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need.” – Philippians 4:11-12

Paul learned the secret of being content and it was not based on his circumstances.

Many people think that they will be content if their circumstances change:

  • If I had enough money
  • If I had another job
  • If I had another husband or wife
  • If I had another house or car
  • If my children were different

The Secret

Paul didn’t judge situations by how he felt about them. He recognized that every one of them was a choice of God for him.  The posture of Paul’s heart was not whether the situation he found himself in was conducive to his own particular needs or desires but whether it would fulfill what God had in mind for him.

Why is it that we complain when we are put under serious pressure and/or uncomfortable situations?  Could it be because we are expecting God to arrange everything to suit our personal desires?

Have we forgotten “we are not our own”. We were “bought with a price”.  We serve a God of purpose. His purpose is to have many sons and daughters in His image. So as He molds us, as He makes us, and as He shapes us through our various situations and circumstances, yield to the process and know, my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:19) & Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice! (Philippians 4:4)
